The conversion

mmol/L = mg/dL ÷ 18.016 · mg/dL = mmol/L × 18.016

The factor is the molar mass of glucose, 180.16 g/mol, expressed in the units the two scales use. Almost everyone rounds it to 18, which is accurate to within a fraction of a unit anywhere on this page.

Blood glucose in mg/dL (used in India, the US and much of Asia) and mmol/L (used in the UK, Australia, Canada and most of Europe). Divide mg/dL by 18.016 for mmol/L; multiply mmol/L by 18.016 for mg/dL.

Common questions

How do you convert mg/dL to mmol/L?
Divide by 18.016. Most clinicians round that to 18. A fasting result of 126 mg/dL is 7.0 mmol/L; 200 mg/dL is 11.1 mmol/L.
How do you convert mmol/L to mg/dL?
Multiply by 18.016. So 7.0 mmol/L is 126 mg/dL and 11.1 mmol/L is 200 mg/dL — the two WHO diabetes thresholds, written in the other unit.
Why do India and the UK use different units?
Both describe the same thing. mg/dL is a mass concentration — milligrams of glucose per decilitre of blood. mmol/L is a molar concentration — millimoles per litre. India, the United States and much of Asia report mg/dL; the UK, Australia, Canada and most of Europe report mmol/L. The conversion factor comes from the molar mass of glucose, 180.16 g/mol.
